Lupin Allergy

Lupin allergy is an emerging food allergy. Lupin is a legume belonging to the same plant family as peanuts and frequently used in the form of flour in pastries, pasta, and many gluten-free products.



As with most food allergens, people can develop an allergy to lupin over time. However, people who are allergic to peanuts, in particular, seem to have a higher risk of being allergic to Lupin and have a reaction on first exposure.


Allergic reactions have similar symptoms as seen with other food allergens and include hives, oral itching, swelling of the face, tongue or throat, abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, runny nose, and watery eyes. Responses can be more severe and life-threatening.


To avoid lupin, read the labels. You can identify its presence in food by looking for “Lupin” or “Lupine” on the label. As with any food allergy, the evaluation and diagnosis of a lupin allergy should be performed by an allergist.
